“The National Library was founded by King Philip V in late 1711 (then called the Royal Library). Its headquarters on Paseo de Recoletos (opened in 1896) houses copies of every book published in Spain, as well as a valuable collection of incunabula, manuscripts, prints, drawings, photographs, maps, sound recordings, sheet music, and more. It has a second headquarters in Alcalá de Henares .

The National Library disseminates this bibliographic heritage through its catalog and the compilation of the Spanish Bibliography. It also provides public services ranging from reference rooms and online services through its website to specialized bibliographic information services and interlibrary loans. To access these collections, you must have a reader or researcher card.

Furthermore, the BNE also houses the  National Newspaper Library , which, thanks to its digitization process initiated in 2007, allows for public consultation and dissemination, via the Internet, of historical and modern Spanish press that forms part of the National Library’s collection.

Through its freely accessible Exhibition Halls , the collections, operation and history of the National Library are presented.”

..This was a beautiful library with amazing books! Some aged, large, and gorgeous inscriptions in so many books. Applying for a library card is relatively easy as well. Very friendly staff, very quiet, and great security…
