There is an article published by the ACLU on August 9, 2021, and I wanted to share my testimony from on the ground at that location (Anzalduas Bridge) in August 2021. I was working there as a Paramedic Contractor for approximately five weeks at that particular location.

While I was there, medical care was provided for migrants, which were well over a thousand every day, and an average of 1 child per adult. On a 12 hour shift I would briefly check about 1,200(+) migrants each shift. At that point, the Border Patrol was expediting migrants to other stations and Catholic charities was actively placing them in holding facilities as well. I cannot testify to the condition of the facilities Catholic charities provided because I did not see them, but I do know the Border Patrol stations they were sent to and there was not inhumane conditions there.

I did hear testimonies from Border Agents about the conditions of that location before I arrived and some said it was quite terrible. The word was an unidentified whistleblower had alerted the media, so Border Patrol management was forced to clean up the site. I cannot testify to that being the truth, but it was what I heard from several sources on the ground. I do want to testify about the women and men that worked there, employees or subcontractors directly working for U.S. Customs and Protection (CBP), Office of Border Patrol (OBP), and the Office of Field Operations (OFO).

Some were bitter about the handling of the mass migration taking place there (mostly at the inaction of management), others were enthusiastic to provide the best service and care possible, under the conditions they were forced to work in. I did not see ANY mistreatment, abuse, or inhuman behavior in my short time there (July-August 2021). The most negative perception that persisted there was the delayed response from their higher ups, which is common in this field, or any other really. In this particular case, it appears that CBP management was very delayed and were only reactive, instead of proactive, with finding appropriate holding facilities for the migrants that were in custody.

I will not get into the legality of why those migrants were detained and being held, but I will say that it was completely within the law (USC, CFR and Immigration Nationality Act). Being a native Spanish speaker, many of those migrants would engage in conversations with me. Without getting into specifics, I could say that every one of them were overwhelmingly happy to have made it to the U.S., careless of the conditions of that temporary facility. The ACLU article highlights some key points, and definitely reflects the faults of both administrations (Biden and Trump) in this case and previous ones, but the article lacks on the ground testimony or participant observation (as most articles do).

While it’s easy to see why many CBP personnel, many of whom are conservative and anti-propagandists just doing their jobs to the best of their abilities, would not speak to journalists of the ACLU or similar organizations; they would properly defer them to the Public Affairs Office, which is essential to ensure sensitive information isn’t spread and where perspectives could not  be exploited as infallible truth (as mainstream media often does). Being a prior service Border Patrol Agent and CBP Officer, I get that. What I do not get is the lack or upper-management involvement in this situation and how higher echelon leadership continuously fails until they are pressured to act. This “reactive vs. proactive” stance is the mindset that has to change, and that is a top down action.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has too many issues to deal with to be properly equipped to handle the immense field of “human trafficking” alone. I  cannot help but think about the real statistical probability of how many of those children are being trafficked within the U.S. HHS whistleblower Tara Lee Rodas is one of the many shining some light on U.S. Government corruption and mishandling of human trafficking within our borders.
